Recently, the approved ‘Your Town’ web site for Boston, Massachusetts, USA broke the story that bestselling author Stephen King, along with his wife, author Tabitha King, have donated $5,000 towards the Poe Foundation of Boston.
The money is going in the direction of the Foundation’s strategy to erect a sizable statue of that American author in Edgar Allen Square, not faraway from Poe’s birthplace.
Foundation President Dan Currie was quoted as saying that there was “some disbelief” since the heavy donation arrived on April Fool’s day.
Artiste Stefanie Rocknak created the proposed sculpture. She was preferred from 265 potential candidates. As well as being an award-winning member from the Sculptor’s Guild, Rocknak is also a professor of Philosophy based in New York.
The planned piece is termed ‘Poe Returning to Boston’ and depicts the novelist carrying a suitcase of ideas, here rendered literally inside the forms of (in the midst of other things) a raven plus a ‘telltale’ heart.
The statue is going to be completed and unveiled once the foundation can raise its proposed aim of $175,000.
Prior to the Kings’ generous gift, the project has received a $25,000 donation from the Highland Street Foundation as well as a $10,000 gift from Poe collector Susan Jaffe Tane. Additionally, Poe admirers and other involved parties have collectively donated some $5,000.
Broadly attributed as a innovator of the detective story, as well as a master of mystery, trepidation and macabre horror, Edgar Allen Poe is one #of the# giants of Us writing.
However, during his existence, Poe’s bond with the city’s literary and cultural elite was habitually a tense one. His production was repeatedly criticized and he found himself disliked from particular literary circles.
Stephen King, who originates from Portland, Maine, has published many novels, novellas and online eBooks, many of them within the horror genre. The writer has also published almost 200 short stories, an art form partially pioneered by Poe. King’s publications have sold over 350 million copies worldwide and also have frequently been adapted for film and television. He is considered one of the world’s most successful authors.
Tabitha King has published 8 novels and several poetry anthologies. She’s also a photographer.
“We’re thrilled and tremendously grateful to possess the support of the Kings” Dan Currie told Boston.com recently.
